Period: | 01/2006 – 03/2007
Employer: | Technisches Hilfswerk (THW, German Federal Agency for Technical Relief) on behalf of German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ)
Description: | Due to the more than ten years lasting civil war (1991 – 2002) a lot of young people did not have the chance to get basic and/or professional education. For this reason GTZ in cooperation with KfW carried out a fact-finding mission in April 2004 to analyse the situation of this disadvantaged youth and to develop a project to improve the situation. Main aim of the sub-project of THW was to improve the initial situation of disadvantaged youth by the following measures: - Setup and operation of workshop (mainly for cars, generators etc.) for NGOs, UN-organisations and embassies; the services are offeredfor usual market prices; - Training of motor mechanics: duration of each course is ten months with 20 students per course; - Mobile training units (in 20”-containers) in car mechanism, arc welding, electro-technics as well as repair of manual pumps. The duration of these courses are between one and three months. The containers can be operated completely autarkic, thus they could be operated in complete Sierra Leone. The mobile units should limit the migration into cities. |
