Emergency Relief: Search and Rescue and water supply

Description: On 26th December 2003 at 05:26 a.m. local time an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.6 on Richter scale hit Bam, a town with around 80,000 inhabitants in the Province of Kerman (1,000 km South of Tehran). According to official sources 30,000 people were killed.

In the evening of 26th December 2003 the German Government sent THW and other German humanitarian organisations to search and rescue trapped people. Additionally a needs assessment for the identification of subsequent measures was carried out. In this context THW sent mobile water purification plants. With these units hospitals were supplied with safe drinking water. At the same time THW ran a water-testing laboratory in which all humanitarian organisations could test water samples. In addition possible rehabilitation measures of the water supply system were evaluated.
