Republic of Liberia Feasibility Study: Water supply Monrovia
Period: | 11/2003 | ||
Employer: | Technisches Hilfswerk (THW, German Federal Agency for Technical Relief)
Description: | After the civil war in Liberia (1989 – 2003) major public infrastructure was completely destroyed. For this reason THW carried out a feasibility study concerning the situation of water supply in Greater Monrovia. The Liberia Water and Sewer Cooperation (LWSC) is responsible for the water supply in complete Liberia. LWSC was responsible for eleven water works and one wastewater treatment plant. In large part the plants were designed and funded from KfW and GTZ between 1968 and 1985. The water treatment plant (WTP) in Monrovia was built in 1968 and extended in 1982. Except the plant in Monrovia all other plants were out of order. The WTP in Monrovia was not damaged during the civil war however a basic rehabilitation of the plant was required. Main parts of the water distribution system were not working due to damages and missing pumps/electricity. The wastewater treatment plant was out of order due to missing chemicals and missing repair.
